21st CENTURY PIRATES
Violence on the high seas and how to avoid it
By Scott N.Snay

The Word "Pirate" conjures romantic images of tall-masted sailing ships, peg legs, parrots and broadside ship battles. It’s fun to think of swashbucklers stealing from one oppressive monarchy or another. At one time, pirates were even sanctioned by the U.S. government to raid foreign ships. More recently, Hollywood’s Errol Flynn and Johnny Depp added charm to the mythology...

DO HOOKS REALLY RUST OUT ?
Worldwide Angler Puts the Myth to the Test
By Scott "Scoot" Shane and Adam Ludwig, Ph.D.

How many times have you watched a mate or experienced angler cut the leader instead of remove the hook from the mouth of a fish? It’s standard practice in most billfish tournaments. But no matter how tough or horrifying an individual shark may be, their populations worldwide are vulnerable to the crush of human consumption. ....
MEXICAN REGS THREATEN BILLFISH
By Dr. Russ Nelson, Ph.D.

In 1985 Mexico led the world in billfish conservation efforts by creating a 50-mile conservation zone along its coastlines. Within that zone, there was no harvest of sailfish, marlin, dorado and swordfish beyond the established sportfishing bag limits. This essentially eliminated commercial fishing for those species within the zone. Mexico’s marine resources and lucrative sportfishing industry have benefited from the protected area for over 20 years. But no more. In June of this year, Mexico’s federal fisheries agency, CONAPESCA, established new shark longlining regulations (Nom-029)...

SPENCER 76' SPORTFISHER
FROM THE MIND OF AN ANGLER.

By Marshall Brodie

Making the transition from charter boat captain to successful boat builder is probably more rare than earning an IGFA Billfish Royal Slam. You can bet those who do make the leap produce boats with excellent fishing layouts and strong hulls for a variety of conditions. Paul Spencer is one such person. After fishing North Carolina’s Outer Banks for much of his life, Spencer had some thoughts on how to build a better boat. ...
